Description
At the end of 1959, Alfa Romeo presented the 2000 Sprint version, an important event in the history of the brand not so much for its commercial success, but because it introduces a happy stylistic harmony destined to characterize many GT or sports models signed by the Bertone body shop in the future.
The 2000 Sprint also marks the debut of Giorgetto Giugiaro, recently in the service of Nuccio Bertone, revealing the genius of that young designer who would become a great name in modern Italian style. Set on a body with a wheelbase of 2.58 meters, it inherits the mechanics from the Spider version: 1975 cm3 engine, 115 horsepower, two double-barrel carburettors, 5-speed gearbox with cloche control on the floor.
On this chassis Giugiaro designs a balanced two-door, four-seater coupe, with a bright, thin pillar roof and a large trunk in a discreet, elusive rear end.
But the real originality lies in the front, with the four headlights incorporated into the grille, so as to create a single volume between the bonnet and fenders: an innovation that will become law for almost all cars, not just Alfa, until today.
It went out of production in 1962 with only 700 units produced.
