The Jaguar XJ-S had been under development since 1968 and as a 2+2 fixed head coupe it was intended as a replacement for the now legendary E Type. From the beginning it was only available with the V12 engine which gave excellent performance with 0-60mph being dispatched in a very respectable 6.9 seconds allied to a top speed of 150mph. Later in the XJ-S’s life it was also available with a six cylinder engine and a manual gearbox. As with any vehicle that has had as long a production life as the XJ-S, there have been major developments. Two of the more significant ones for the XJ-S were the launch of the Cabriolet in 1983 and later, in May 1988, the Convertible.
