Description
Chassis No. WP0JB2924LS860135
This Porsche 928 GT was purchased new from Capitol Import Autos of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by Fred Kiekhaefer. Son of Carl Kiekhaefer, the colorful, omnipotent founder of Mercury Marine and a renowned NASCAR sponsor of the 1950s, Mr. Kiekhaefer inherited great performance legacies on both land and water, running Mercury Performance Products, later known as Mercury Racing, and introducing numerous innovations into offshore competition. He and Jim Taylor followed similar career trajectories and came to know each other through their shared industry, and when Mr. Kiekhaefer was through with the Porsche, Mr. Taylor acquired it from him – picking it up in Wisconsin and driving it home via the Ohio Turnpike.
The Guards Red car remains mostly original aside from the usual service items and some repair to the paint on the nose, following a collision with a shredded tire during the road trip home to New York. The tan leather interior is untouched and as-used, with the passenger seat appearing to have been scarcely sat in it. Equipment includes the desirable five-speed manual transmission, a Blaupunkt radio and cassette deck, as well as dual sport mirrors, rear windshield wiper, and the original wheels, shod in Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The engine compartment is similarly original and untouched. At the time of cataloging, the car had recorded 61,481 miles. Original sales paperwork is included in the file, listing Mr. Kiekhaefer at the Kiekhaefer Aeromarine business address in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, as well as service records from both ownerships and other ephemera and a clean CARFAX report.
Porsche 928s are increasingly collected and desirable, and this two-owner, original five-speed car, boasting excellent motorsports provenance, is ripe for the choosing.
