Where does one begin to describe this 1951 Mercedes-Benz 220B convertible. It does not really matter to be honest, as this car has been perfectly restored in every aspect. The outcome will be the same: the wonderful condition of this Mercedes-Benz. The W187 220B was the first post-war Mercedes-Benz to be given a 6-cylinder engine. There were only 997 of these models were built. The car has a M180 2.195cc straight-six coupled to a manual steering column 4-speed transmission. This car has truly been taken apart down to the very last screw. Everything has been either restored, overhauled and protected against the elements. Whether we are talking about the carburettors or the brightwork, everything is just as beautiful. Clearly nobody scrimped on cost or effort during this restoration. The fine bodywork has nice and thin, correctly aligned panelwork. The black paintwork is in perfect order without any signs of use. The brightwork adorning the bodywork is in perfect state without any gaps between the chrome and the body. Again, of the amount of meticulous workmanship invested is obvious. The interior trim was completely re-upholstered and is in perfect shape. During the restoration lovely light grey carpets with brown edging were fitted, matching the car’s finish. The seats have been upholstered with fine supple brown leather. Whether it is the steering wheel, the “Telefunken” radio or the instruments the same care and attention has been afforded during the restoration. No restoration is of course complete without due attention to the car’s mechanical aspects. Again everything was taken down to its individual component and rebuilt using new gaskets and rubbers. The engine, brakes and suspension were all seen to. As a result we have a perfectly running engine. The gearbox shifts smoothly without any play. The undercarriage is in perfect condition, giving the car a lovely relaxed ride. The double drum brakes respond precisely and contribute to the stately German convertible’s modern driving characteristics. This is a complete restoration as true as a die and of the utmost quality. Works on the car have been documented photographically and with various invoices. If you are in the market for a top-quality Mercedes-Benz w187 220B convertible that is ready to be enjoyed, then this is the perfect one for you.
