In the mid-nineteen-sixties, the range of medium sized Jaguar saloons included 4 models. In 1968, Jaguar made a clean sweep by introducing the XJ6. Its style broke with the traditional curves and displayed tauter, more angular lines. The car, which was soon to be hailed as the best saloon car in the world, was immediately recognized as a major milestone in automobile development. The car was powered by the twin-cam straight six XK engine, a 4.2 litre and a new size, 2.8 litre. Buyers could choose a manual gearbox with optional overdrive or a Borg Warner automatic box. In 1973, the Series 1 was replaced by the S2, recognizable by its raised front bumper, to comply with American regulations, and consequent upper and lower radiator grilles, as well as a new dashboard. The problematic 2.8 litre engine was replaced by a new 3.4 litre unit (not derived from previous generations of the 3.4 engine).
The model we are presenting is fitted with the 4.2l 6-cylinder engine coupled to an automatic gearbox and was first registered in January 1978. As a Jaguar enthusiast, Francis Staub owned several of them, including this seemingly original French Series 2. The paintwork of this XJ6 has been redone a long time ago but the general presentation of the car is nice. The chromes look good as well, while the leather in the cabin is rather well preserved and will need some nourishment. The roof doesn't fall down but the woodwork and varnishes are shattered in places. The mechanics seem to work well, but our test drive won't allow us to judge reliability on a long trip. Some work would thus be necessary before considering new long-distance trips.
