Enzo Ferrari has been against mid-engined road cars, preferring the front engine instead. This was at least until 1973, when Ferrari produced the first "BB", an acronym that stands for "Berlinetta Boxer" and, in particular, the 365 GT/4 BB which had been presented two years earlier at the Turin Auto Show.
The peculiarity of the BB models is that they are the first to be designed directly in Ferrari with the 12-cylinder engine in a central rear position, that is, behind the seats.
The “heart” of the 365 GT/4 BB was a newly developed 12-cylinder engine, identified by the design code F102 AB 00, capable of 360 hp.
The advantage of the central engine, positioned between the wheel axles, is to concentrate the masses within the wheelbase of the car, for a better balance.
The design was innovative for the time, thanks to the air intake that occupies the entire lower section of the front and the retractable optical groups, which disappear into the special housings, helping to make the cleaner design. The frame was made of steel, while the door panels and hood were made of aluminum. The 365 GT4 BB was the first Ferrari to be equipped with a space-saving spare wheel instead of a full-size wheel.
The Ferrari 365 GT4 BB was produced in only 387 units between 1973 and 1976.
