Mercedes-AMG GT breaks cover to go 911-hunting

Mercedes has revealed the SLS’s long-awaited pseudo-successor, to be known as the Mercedes-AMG GT – and it’s poised to scare the wits out of Porsche et al…

As the second series-production model from Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division in Affalterbach, the GT will retain the same front-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout of its predecessor – but little else. The new car will be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (the turbos unusually mounted within the cylinder banks), have a lightweight aluminium body structure and, more importantly for most, be significantly cheaper than the recently discontinued Mercedes-Benz SLS. You’ll have to do without those heavy Gullwing doors, though.

Crowded market

Available initially in 503bhp GT S form, then shortly afterwards in ‘standard’ 456bhp GT guise – bumpers, tailpipes and wheels being the differentiators – the new car will go on sale early next year. But it not only has the Porsche 911 Turbo and Jaguar F-type R to contend with, but also a new Audi R8 and whatever Aston Martin and McLaren have in the pipeline.
