De Tomaso is back with a voluptuous V12 bang

Nope, the voluptuous spaceship you’re staring at slack-jawed is not a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. It’s actually a De Tomaso, the chequered Italian marque which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. We can think of worse birthday presents…

Developed by the same team who built the wild Apollo Intensa Emozione, the De Tomaso P72 is a V12-powered, carbon-fibre supercar that melds the looks of such historic prototypes as the Ferrari 330 P3/4 and the ill-fated Ghia-De Tomaso Sport 5000 with the exquisite jewel-like details of a Pagani Huayra. Just check out the opulent interior! As its name implies, just 72 will be built, priced in the region of 750,000 USD (excl. taxes) each. The revived marque is remaining tight-lipped about the mid-engined car’s technical specifications, but we do know that it will have a proper manual gearbox and be built to modern FIA LMP motorsport standards, which means should it so desire, De Tomaso could potentially take the P72 to Le Mans under 2021’s new hypercar regulations. Given the fabled Italian name is rooted in motorsport, wouldn’t that have made Alejandro De Tomaso a very happy chap indeed?
