The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss was unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show; a lightweight speedster variant of the SLR as potent in performance as it is arresting in appearance. Just 75 examples were built, offered exclusively to existing SLR owners as a modern homage to the exquisite 300 SLR that Stirling Moss campaigned to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia.

Rather like the 300 SLR, nearly all the creature comforts of the car it is based on were sacrificed in the pursuit of performance, aesthetics and extreme driver (and passenger) enjoyment. This even included the windscreen and roof, which not only adds to the visual drama but ramps up the intensity of the driving experience ten-fold. Indeed, when Car Magazine road tested the car in 2009, they likened the experience of full throttle acceleration to “standing on the wingtip of a 747” and sighted the 0-100 km/h time of 3.5 seconds and top speed of 354 km/h achievable only by those “whose neck muscles can bear it”. This level of performance is accomplished by utilising the same 641 bhp, 5.5-litre supercharged AMG V-8 that powers the SLR 722 Edition and pairing it with 200 kg of weight savings; achieved by adoption of the speedster style as well as the extensive use of carbon fibre for the bodywork, underside and new aerodynamic package.

This fantastic Sterling Moss edition left the factory in December 2009 as a European-specification example delivered to Luxemburg. Since then, it has covered just under 8,400 km from new. It has had a total of two owners and presents in pristine condition, specified in the special-order colour of Antimony Grey Crystal over a spartan, yet luxurious interior of black leather, enhanced with Silver Arrow 300 SL red trims and accents. It is truly breath-taking in its appearance.

Like all cars of this type, it has benefitted from being regularly exercised and enjoyed during its life and is notable for its participation in the 2012 Mercedes-Benz 1000 Miglia challenge. Naturally, it has always been looked after by Mercedes-Benz and it will be offered fully serviced and with numerous accessories including goggles in their original bags, hats, tonneau covers, and service manuals; ready for its next owner to enjoy to the full.

La Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss è stata presentata al North American International Auto Show del 2009; è una versione alleggerita e completamente aperta della SLR, assolutamente straordinaria nelle sue prestazioni e nel suo aspetto. Di “Stirling Moss”, omaggio moderno alla mitica 300 SLR che Stirling Moss ha portato alla vittoria nella Mille Miglia del 1955, ne sono stati costruiti solo 75 esemplari, offerti esclusivamente a chi già possedeva una SLR.

Seguendo la linea tracciata dalla 300 SLR, quasi tutti i comfort presenti sulla versione da cui è derivata, sono stati sacrificati nella ricerca di prestazioni, estetica e divertimento estremo del guidatore (e del passeggero). Questi “tagli” hanno incluso anche il parabrezza ed il tetto, con un risultato che, non solo aumenta l’impatto visivo della macchina, ma moltiplica per dieci l'intensità dell'esperienza di guida. Quando, nel 2009, la rivista Car Magazine ha testato l'auto, ha paragonato l'esperienza dell'accelerazione a tutto gas allo "stare sulla punta di un 747" e ha ottenuto un tempo sullo 0-100 km/h di 3,5 secondi ed una velocità massima di 354 km/h realizzabile solo da coloro che hanno "i muscoli del collo in grado di sopportarlo". Questo livello di prestazioni è stato ottenuto utilizzando lo stesso motore V8 AMG da 5,5 litri e 641 CV che alimenta la SLR 722 Edition e, abbinandolo a 200 kg di risparmio di peso, ottenuto con l'adozione dello stile “tutto aperto”, l'uso estensivo della fibra di carbonio per la carrozzeria e la parte inferiore della macchina, e, utilizzando un nuovo pacchetto aerodinamico.

Questa fantastico esemplare di Stirling Moss ha lasciato la fabbrica nel dicembre 2009, dotato di specifiche europee ed è stato consegnato in Lussemburgo. Da allora, ha coperto poco meno di 8.400 km ed ha avuto, in totale due proprietari ed è, ancora oggi, in perfette condizioni, esaltate dall’originale colore, special e fornito su richiesta, di Antimony Grey Crystal su un interno, semplice ma lussuoso, in pelle nera, arricchito dallo stile Silver Arrow 300 SL, con finiture e cadenini rossi. È, nel suo aspetto, veramente mozzafiato.

Come tutte le vetture di questo tipo, ha beneficiato dall’essere regolarmente usata e goduta, nel corso degli anni, dai suoi proprietari ed è da rimarcare la sua partecipazione all’evento Mercedes-Benz 1000 Miglia del 2012. Naturalmente, è sempre stata seguita e mantenuta da Mercedes-Benz ed è offerta fresca di tagliando, con tutti gli accessori originali, ancora nelle loro confezioni originali, come gli occhiali a mascherina, i cappelli, il telo copri abitacolo ed i manuali di servizio. Pronta per essere goduta appieno dal suo prossimo proprietario.

Le opportunità di acquistare un’auto come la SLR Stirling Moss sono rare e, l'esperienza di guida viscerale che offre è unica.
