Transmission: 3 gears, Automatic
Model code: R107
Registration number: MB-63-85

Imagine your boss telling you to design an SL to replace the world-famous W133 Pagoda. That would not be an easy task to start tackling. But Mercedes would not be Mercedes if they could not come up with a scoop that substantially elevated the bar as they managed with the W107. From 1971 when production started with the R107 until the last one rolled off the production line in 1989 over 237,000 were built, together with the G -class making it one of the longest-running Mercedes models. The R107 (R for Roadster) was especially targeted at the American market and therefore needed to be equipped with lots of client-pleasing luxury accessories.

Our 280SL was solely intended for the European market as funnily enough, the straight-six did not meet the stringent American exhaust norm whereas the 5.6 litre V8 did comply. This 280SL was initially registered in 1979, ten years later it found its way to California where it remained in sole ownership of one Mr Federighi for the following 33 years. Now we are able to offer it over here in Europe. For those who love stats here goes: this is a straight-six cylinder 2.8 litre, which incidentally was meant due to the oil crises of the early ’70s to be Mercedes’ answer for a more fuel-efficient model. It produces 185 Hp with a top speed of 207 km/hr and a 3-speed automatic, certainly figures not be sneered at for the time and typically Mercedes-Benz. Another interesting figure would be the low mileage of just 97,687 km it has travelled during its 43-year lifespan, now that is quite remarkable for a Merc.

Overall the car has remained in reasonably original and unadulterated condition, we typify that as being in a good used condition. Some time ago the car was resprayed as is customary in sunny California, the interior is more or less original with the appropriate signs of normal use. The engine runs really well and the automatic works supplely, creating that feeling of luxurious automotive transport with this R107 as only Mercedes-Benz can. This car is ready for many more years of driving pleasure so why make it your new daily driver?
