In winning the prestigious Dewar Trophy for dependability in 1908, a mere five years after building its first automobile, Cadillac had cemented a reputation as the leader in rigorously engineered, meticulously manufactured automobiles. This reputation led it to be acquired the following year by the newly formed General Motors Corporation as its prestige division, solely devoted to the production of luxury automobiles.

Recognizing the disappearing market for single-cylinder engines, Cadillac’s first move as a member of GM was to consolidate all models into one four-cylinder-powered car, the Model 30. The trimmed-down production line enabled Cadillac to be more efficient and cut the Model 30’s list price by over 25 percent in 1909 from the previous year, while improving the engine and driveline at the same time.

Cadillac’s signature 3.7-liter, inline, four-cylinder engine produced 30 horsepower and was mated to a more refined three-speed, selective sliding gear transmission with two-wheel mechanical brakes providing the stopping power. Surrounding the drivetrain was a newly designed body featuring flat front fenders with full running boards and dust shields.

Wearing a wonderfully presentable older restoration, the Model 30 offered here sports the desirable three-passenger roadster body style with unique “mother-in-law” rear jump seat. The car is said to be equipped with its original body containing much of the factory wood frame, as confirmed by a period photograph of the car. Deep green exterior paint compliments tan, button-tufted upholstery with period-correct pinstriping on the fenders and 26-inch, wood-spoke “artillery” wheels wrapped in Firestone tires. All brass elements including the headlamps and lanterns, as well as the optional brass-framed windshield wear a pleasing finish that matches the rest of the lovely patina displayed throughout this charming roadster.

Offered for the first time in over 50 years from the time it was purchased in Rhode Island, this Cadillac is accompanied by an original owner’s manual and an early period photo.
