Au début des années 1960, le groupe britannique Rootes dispose de nombreuses marques (Hillman, Singer, Humber ou… Sunbeam) occupant les différents segments du marché. En compétition, et notamment en rallye, c’est le roadster Sunbeam Alpine qui est chargé de défendre les couleurs du groupe face aux Triumph et MG concurrentes. Le marché américain est plutôt porteur, mais pourquoi ne pas tenter de conquérir le cœur des Italien-ne-s ? Les dirigeants du groupe passent un contrat avec la Carrozzeria Touring, qui se chargera de construire sur place des Sunbeam Alpine et des Hillman Super Minx. Il est aussi décidé de développer un véhicule spécifique au marché transalpin, cette fois-ci capable de concurrencer les plus belles GT italiennes, dont les Lancia Flaminia et autres Alfa Romeo 2600, pas moins ! Touring élabore donc une étonnante GT 4-places sur châssis d’Hilmman, avec le 4-cylindres Rootes de 1 592 cm3. La Sunbeam Venezia (Venise en Italien) est née ! Présentée au Salon de Milan 1963, la voiture, carrossée selon le procédé Superleggera, rencontre un certain succès, cependant limité par son prix de vente, équivalent à celui d’une Jaguar Mk 2, et bien plus élevé que les rivales désignées. Sur les 300 voitures (puis 250) prévues, il n’en sera finalement fabriqué que moins de 150, quelques exemplaires étant exportés, notamment au Royaume-Uni ou en Espagne.
C’est le cas de la voiture que nous vous proposons, qui réapparut aux mains d’un amateur ibérique au début des années 1990. Initialement de couleur bleu marine avec un intérieur marron, et équipé du moteur 1 592 cm3 accouplé à une boîte de vitesses automatique, il fut décidé de restaurer la voiture dans sa configuration actuelle : teinte grise, intérieur en tissus bleu, et moteur 1 725 cm3 (qui remplaça le 1 592 cm3 dans la gamme Rootes au milieu des années 1960, réputé pour sa fiabilité et sa robustesse) accolé à une boîte mécanique. La restauration de la voiture vient à peine d’être terminée, et c’est donc son futur propriétaire qui effectuera les premiers kilomètres à son volant. Nous avons pu constater le sérieux du travail réalisé, que ce soit au niveau carrosserie (même si l’ajustage des éléments mériterait d’être repris), intérieur et mécanique. Les Sunbeam Venezia sont rares sur le marché, et la cote modérée de cette authentique création Touring ne doit pas vous faire hésiter longtemps…

At the beginning of the 1960s, the British Rootes group owned many brands (Hillman, Singer, Humber or... Sunbeam) occupying different market segments. In competition, and in particular in rallying, it is the Sunbeam Alpine roadster which is in charge of defending the colors of the group against Triumph and MG competitors. The American market is rather successful, but why not try to conquer the hearts of Italians? The group's directors signed a contract with Carrozzeria Touring, which would build Sunbeam Alpines and Hillman Super Minxes on site. It was also decided to develop a vehicle specifically for the Italian market, this time capable of competing with the most beautiful Italian GTs, including the Lancia Flaminia and Alfa Romeo 2600, no less! Touring therefore developed an astonishing 4-seater GT on a Hillman chassis, with the Rootes 4-cylinder 1,592 cc engine. The Sunbeam Venezia (Venice in Italian) was born! Presented at the 1963 Milan Motor Show, the car, bodied according to the Superleggera process, was met with a certain success, however limited by its selling price, equivalent to that of a Jaguar Mk 2, and much higher than the designated rivals. Out of the 300 cars (then 250) planned, only 150 were finally produced, with a few examples being exported, notably to the United Kingdom and Spain.

This is the case of the car we are proposing, which reappeared in the hands of an Iberian enthusiast in the early 1990s. Initially in navy blue with a brown interior, and equipped with the 1,592 cc engine coupled to an automatic gearbox, it was decided to restore the car to its current configuration: grey color, blue fabric interior, and 1,725 cc engine (which replaced the 1,592 cc in the Rootes range in the mid-1960s, renowned for its reliability and robustness) coupled to a mechanical gearbox. The restoration of the car has just been completed, and it is therefore its future owner who will drive it for the first time. We could notice the seriousness of the work done, whether it is on the body (even if the adjustment of the elements would deserve to be resumed), interior and mechanics. Sunbeam Venezias are rare on the market, and the moderate price of this authentic Touring creation should not make you hesitate for long...
