French title
Big sister of the famous 3 series, the BMW 1600 which will be declined in 1600-2 then 1602 until 1975 is part of the BMW 02 Series which begins in 1966 with the presentation of the family sedan with two doors which wanted to be reasonable in price and especially modern and sporting.
Introducing the 4-cylinder M10 engine with displacements ranging from 1.5L to 2.0L, the 02 series offered several cars with different engines and finishes.
Its modern lines, lightness and relative sportiness made it a resounding success and paved the way for the 3 series bomb.
With several body styles in its catalogue, the 1600 could be ordered as a saloon, an estate or a convertible.
The latter is a real rarity on our roads. Indeed, less than 1,700 were made and many models have not survived the ravages of time. Considered as the top of the 1600 range, the cabriolet was well equipped with half leather - half fabric or full leather upholstery, a thick soft top allowing to drive in any weather as well as chrome elements inside and outside the car, all in a compact size.
Equipped with the 1600cc engine as its name suggests, the 1600 convertible benefits from 86 horsepower sent to the rear wheels and propels the car up to 160 km/h, a great feat for a car in this segment. Quite expressive, the 1600 engine is nonetheless economical and reliable: an excellent car to swallow up the kilometres.
The BMW 1600-2 Cabriolet presented here was built in 1969 and first registered in France. Today the car has been beautifully restored in 2011 and is in its rare original BMW varnish yellow colour with a navy blue canvas top. Aesthetically, the paintwork is well stretched over the whole body despite some small flaws and chips, the exterior chrome was redone at the same time as the paintwork and looks very good. Solid chrome wheels complete the convertible.
The interior is a transition from the 1960's to the 1970's; the half-leather, half-fabric upholstery, almost impossible to find today, was redone as it was originally. The cabriolet offers 4 generous seats compared to the competition with a comfort worthy of the Bavarian firm. In front of the large bakelite steering wheel are three round meters in a minimalist style, going to the essential with a sporty touch. The centre console ends at the transmission tunnel where the original radio and the 4-speed manual gearbox are located.
An important detail is the metal antenna that is placed against the left side of the windscreen with its characteristic red tip, like a little cherry on the bonnet (cake). Very endearing, sparkling with its lemon yellow colour, this little convertible could take you to the end of the world. Rare on our roads, it will enchant you in summer as well as in winter; impossible to be in a bad mood on board this model!"
