Mythical 4x4
Concours condition

In the early 1950s, as Japan was just recovering from World War II and its defeat, a young entrepreneur by the name of Kiichiro Toyoda embarked on a car venture. The family business (Toyota with a T, a letter easier to paint as a pictogram) has been particularly successful since the 1930s thanks to the manufacture of automatic looms sold worldwide. He had already built a few thousand cars (the famous Toyota A1) before the war, but he now set his sights on an off-road vehicle, outrageously copying the American M38A1 Jeep. In July 1951, two Toyota jeeps climbed Mount Fuji in front of astonished journalists. The Toyota J (indicating an all-terrain vehicle in the manufacturer's nomenclature) was born! From 1955 to 1960, the Japanese brand developed its now legendary Land Cruiser with the 2 and 3 series. For the new decade, the design of the legendary off-roader was refined and gentrified (everything is relative!) to appeal to the general public, and not only to the military and professionals. The 4 series, which also benefited from all the experience acquired since the 1950s, was to launch Toyota to the level of the world's largest manufacturers. From 1960 to 1984, 1,500,000 Land Cruiser Series 4 were sold all over the world. It was even the first Japanese vehicle to be built abroad, in the Ford factory in Brazil. The range was extensive, with three chassis lengths, several body variants (wagon, pick-up or van) and a multitude of successive petrol (FJ) or diesel (BJ) engines.
The Toyota illustrated here is a 1979 BJ 40, in short chassis, which benefits from the iconic 3 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine appeared in 1974. It was bought new by a member of the Beckers family, a Toyota dealer in Maaseik, Belgium, who kept it until 2014. The odometer shows just under 37,000 km, which is probably the original mileage, as there is a label stating that it was serviced in 1995 at 26,740 km. Incredible as it may seem, it also appears that the vehicle is in near new condition, showing little use and great care taken in its use or storage. At a time when Range Rovers and Mercedes G-Class are going for crazy prices, this indestructible and legendary Toyota 4x4, witness of an era of conquest and great freedom, will delight the most demanding amateurs.

This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on June the 20th, 2021.
