Superb design by Paul Bracq
Reliable, comfortable 4-seater coupé
The Mercedes-Benz W111 series, styled by the famous designer Paul Bracq, appeared in 1959 and replaced the ageing ‘Adenauer’ and 300S models which had been designed after the war and first sold at the very beginning of the 1950s.
Produced first as a four-door saloon, the coupé and cabriolet were added to the range in 1961. Their immaculate build quality, refined interiors and six-cylinder engines were all strengths which defined to perfection this new range of cars to bear the three-pointed star.
The coupé was particularly elegant, a perfect blend of the classical and modern. It was powered by a 2195 cc 6-cylinder engine and could transport four passengers in speed and comfort. Unsurprisingly, it became the car of choice for members of high society. Sold until 1965, just 14,173 cars were built.
The model which we are presenting is a Mercedes 220 SE Coupé fitted with a manual gearbox. It was first registered on 9 July 1964. Registered in the Loire since 1984, its current owner acquired the coupé in 2013. It was then in ‘barn find’ condition. After the ignition was replaced in 2014, the car could be put back on the road and now runs. Outside, its duotone champagne and black bodywork was repainted in the past. Inside, the seats were also restored some years ago, while the rear bench seat still has its original leather upholstery.
A general mechanical overhaul should be envisaged. Nonetheless, we were able to drive the car a few miles and noted that it would form a good basis for restoration. This 220 SE is offered today at a very attractive estimated price and represents a fine opportunity to buy one of Mercedes’ most emblematic coupés.
