Description

Off-Roading Legend

Influenced by Willys Jeeps in World War II, the first Land Rover arrived in 1948. Customers quickly discovered that this car could take on just about any landscape, making the demand for them high. After the success of the first model, Land Rover created the Series II, which came about in 1958, ten years after the first. Finally, in 1971 the Series III was created.

History of the Model

The Land Rover Defender III had similar body and engine options as its predecessor, the Series IIA, but there were some significant differences. For instance, the headlights were now mounted in the fenders and the traditional metal grill was replaced with a plastic one. All forward gears now had syncros, an alternator replaced the generator, the dashboard was redesigned, and more controls moved to the steering column. Also, there was an expansive range of four engines. Previously, there was only a 2.25 litre gas version, a couple diesels, and a V8. The 2.25 litre engine’s compression was raised from 7:1 to 8:1. Although the Series III may not be deemed as the fastest car on earth, it sure did have a lot of grunt added to it.

Market Trend

The market for Land Rover Defenders is expected to go up as the last model just ended production this past January. Famous Owners include The Queen, Bill Murray, Robin Williams, Ralph Lauren, Paul Mccartney, Sean Connery and many more who appreciate this timeless icon.

Summary

The Land Rover Defender Series III is a great car to drive around town, or go on an off-roading adventure. This specific model offers open seating in the back, ideal for a true farm-like setting. Although there were models after the Series III, it still remains a very special car in history. For the time, the Series III’s technical specs were considered modern and this car could really take on any terrain.
