The Herbert Johnson racing helmet was ubiquitous throughout the 1950s and 1960s, made famous by Juan Manuel Fangio throughout his later career. Made of linen fabric set in shellac, they were available bare, but were often painted by their owners. This helmet is believed to have been used during Phil Hill's early Grand Prix career, and also during his maiden victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1958.
