In 1975, Porsche embarked on a new adventure, that of a front-engined GT with the 928. This model was a total innovation for the brand, because the engine was completely new and the gearbox was coupled to the rear axle. The style and design of the bodywork is also completely new. To support the 928, Porsche launched the following year, in collaboration with Volkswagen, a lower model called 924 which was not very successful. However, the intermediate version presented in 1981, the 944 with its real Porsche engine, was a success. The replacement for the 944 arrived in 1991. There are so many important modifications that Porsche changes the name and presents its novelty under the name of 968. With a general style reminiscent of its predecessor, the 968 has a 2990 cc engine developing 240 HP with a six-speed gearbox. This engine is very torquey with its variable valve lift, and was also the largest four-cylinder petrol engine in the world. Top speed is 252 km/h. Braking is excellent with ABS as standard. The power steering is very pleasant. Easy to drive, the 968 is a car that is easy to use in everyday life.
The car presented here was first registered in 1994 and purchased new by Mrs. P. Kay, wife of the manager of the Porsche dealership in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Presented in its original white configuration with a grey leather interior and matching soft top, Mrs Kay preferred the manual transmission to the automatic, which is rare enough to be noted in the land of two-pedal cars. The car looks good, it is equipped with a soft top cover in the same colour as the bonnet and a windscreen for the comfort of users. Arriving in France at the end of 2019, it has all the administrative documents to be registered in the country.
Unloved, the 968 is now taking its revenge with a growing interest for this model with its atypical and modern lines for its time. It is a wise choice for all those who wish to acquire a reliable and powerful convertible.
