Porsche showed its first 911 - badged 90 - in September, 1963 at the Frankfurt Auto Show a year before it was to go on sale to the general public. Despite cries from the faithful, the new concept was favorably received with customers clamoring for a production version. A year later the car was displayed at the Paris Automobile Salon where Porsche was contacted by Peugeot’s legal department. Peugeot objected to the infringement of its French trademark of using two numbers with a zero in between, a moniker which the company had been using since 1929. Porsche considered the French export market essential to its success so the 901 designation was changed to the 911. Amazingly, nearly 53 years later, the 911 lives on!
Porsche introduced the 911T for the 1967 model year. The “T” stood for touring and was a lower-priced variant and the first six-cylinder 911 offered below 20,000 marks on the German market. The interior was similar to the four-cylinder 912 and with less weight and fewer standard features, many 911T’s became the basis for competition models.
