Although the Porsche Speedster has evolved since its debut in 1954, it has remained an exciting, and exclusive, celebration of open-air performance. First envisioned by American importer Max Hoffman, the original Porsche 356-based Speedster was a success with its removable windscreen and minimalist folding top. Porsche revived the nameplate for the 911-based Carrera 3.2 Speedster in 1989, and the tradition continues with new Speedsters launched periodically to this day.
For 1993, Porsche again reprised the Speedster badge with a model that split the difference between the Carrera 2 and the more hardcore Carrera RS. Fewer than 1,000 were built, each featuring a raked windshield and manually raised cloth top intended for inclement weather only. The Speedster featured a 3.6-liter air-cooled SOHC horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine rated at 247 horsepower. Both five-speed manual and four-speed Tiptronic automatic transmissions were available, and the Speedster could be ordered in either left- or right-hand drive.
The 1994 911 Speedster offered here shows fewer than 12,000 miles since being delivered to Sportique Motors in Huntington, New York, in the summer of 1993. Outside, it wears traditional Porsche Guards Red paint that complements the tri-tone silver, grey, and black leather sports seats with hard shells found inside. Like other Speedsters, its RS door cards with red pulls are set off by additional red accents on its instrument cluster, its five-speed manual gear shifter, its emergency brake, and even its seatbelts.
This 911 Speedster was ordered with full climate control, cruise control, a cassette radio, and a limited-slip rear differential according to both the build sticker under its front hood and its original window sticker. Complementing the car is a set of Guards Red Cup five-spoke Turbo Design wheels, painted from the factory to match the exterior, wrapped in Bridgestone tires.
Retained by its first owner for over two decades, the Speedster was purchased by a marque specialist in 2015 before being acquired by its present owner in 2018. Under his care, it has been serviced by Porsche of Hilton Head in Hardeeville, South Carolina; addition to routine maintenance, notable work includes the replacement of the fuel pump and lines in April 2020 and the fuel pressure regulator in March 2021.
Accompanied by a Porsche Production Specifications certificate, manuals, window sticker, and service invoices, this example beautifully embodies the spirit of the first Speedsters as envisioned by Max Hoffman over six decades ago—a Porsche spirit that remains no less enticing today.
