Plymouth’s smartly styled B-body intermediates were all-new for 1966–and arguably the most attractive cars from Plymouth to date. Plymouth described them as “New style and new performance in a large economy size;” a bit of an understatement, especially when equipped with the newly available 426 “Street” Hemi. Factory-rated at 425 horsepower, the $907.60 option included what was essentially a detuned race engine with a 10.25:1 compression ratio, stiffer torsion bars and rear springs, metallic brake linings, and Goodyear Blue Streak tires. Mandatory items included the heavy-duty Torqueflite automatic or four-speed manual transmission.
Car and Driver tested an early Hemi Satellite and recorded a 13.8-second quarter-mile time at 104 mph along with a top speed of 130 mph. 60 mph arrived in a mere 5.3 seconds. This was staggering performance for the time—and it was available for purchase at your local Chrysler-Plymouth dealer.
Said to have been subject to a complete nut and bolt rotisserie restoration, this black over black Satellite is fitted with period-correct red stripe tires. It is described by the consigner as “looking better than it did coming off the showroom floor in 1966.” He further adds, that the “underside is so clean you could eat off it” and that the interior as is fantastic as the exterior. He states that the new owner will be amazed by the car, as “the detail never ends.”
One of 503 four-speed-equipped Satellite two-door hardtop coupes built for 1966, it is representative of the top-of-the-line Mopar B-body with additional exterior brightwork, and the Western scroll motif vinyl bucket seat interior replete with factory AM radio and center console. Included in the sale is a jack, owner’s manual, shop manual, and 1966 model year brochure.
