Description
The W111 Mercedes-Benz coupes and cabriolets were launched in 1961 as an adjunct to the fintail sedans. The coupe and convertible previewed the future, as the sedans lost their fins in 1965. With the 220 SE modestly powered by the 2,195 cc six-cylinder engine and the 300 SE powered by the 2,996 cc six-cylinder engine, the W111 was transformed when the 3.5-liter V-8 was fitted in 1969–1971. The new model, which had standard power steering, was an autobahn stormer capable of reaching speeds in excess of 125 mph in refined comfort.
The low-mileage car on offer is a sunroof coupe, one of 808 sold in the US in 1971. It is fitted with a four-speed automatic transmission and air-conditioning, and finished in dark blue with a blue Roser leather interior and correct period radio. A copy of the original window sticker indicates the midnight blue (904G) paint is a color change from blue (903G), to match the interior.
Both paint and interior are in wonderful condition, as is the original wood trim. The engine and transmission number stampings correspond to the included factory data card, and service records confirm the mileage is accurate. The paint is excellent, the chrome is exceptional, and the undercarriage is in show condition. The new owner will have the option of showing this striking coupe or driving it, making this particular example one to consider closely.
