Description
The 280 SL was first introduced in 1968, representing the final iteration of the highly successful Mercedes-Benz SL or “Sport Leicht” line. The model marked the culmination of a gradual transition from sports car to luxurious grand tourer – most notably, with the addition of the upgraded 2.8-liter M130 engine.
This 280 SL is one of 23,885 examples built between 1968 and 1971, widely known as one of the most well-loved Mercedes-Benz roadsters ever built. This superb example was expertly restored in Europe and finished in the striking color scheme of Bronze Brown (DB 461) over Cognac MB-Tex interior with color-matched fitted luggage and spare tire cover. This 280 SL features desirable European headlights and correct steel wheels with color-keyed hubcaps, while the interior is resplendent with its restored instrument panel and Becker Europa radio. Perhaps most significant is the recent professional installation of a Getrag six-speed manual gearbox and air-conditioning, features that contribute to the car’s already superb touring capabilities.
Offered from a private Southern California collection, the 280 SL is accompanied by a dossier of receipts, a photographic record of the restoration, and a copy of the factory data card detailing its production numbers. Thoughtfully upgraded and presented in excellent condition, this stylish 280 SL provides the perfect opportunity to experience one of the most admired Mercedes-Benz roadsters on the open road or the show field.
