Description
This 300 SEL 6.3 has enjoyed a pampered life in the care of three enthusiasts since it was first sold in Scottsdale, Arizona, in June 1971. Noted collector Axel Wars purchased the 6.3 new, when he had the delivering dealer install its distinctive vinyl top – a perfect accent to the Tunis Beige Metallic paint and Chocolate Brown leather interior. During his 23 years of ownership, Mr. Wars drove the high-performance sedan only 24,000 miles before selling it to Bay Area enthusiast John Hopfenbeck in 1994.
The present caretaker acquired the car from Mr. Hopfenbeck in 1996. Over 21 years of ownership, the consignor has dedicated countless hours to the careful preservation of the 6.3 and has added just 21,000 miles. According to the consignor, it retains its original leather, carpet, wood trim, exterior brightwork, and much of its original paint. Maintained by expert René Wiegand at Burlingame Motors in California, this Mercedes-Benz has received the same fastidious care that it has enjoyed since new. A concours-level handbook set with service manuals, two factory build cards, and a pristine, original tool kit are present and included.
Steeped in a legacy of awe-inspiring performance that made the 300 SEL 6.3 one of the fastest cars of its day, this unique example offers a very rare opportunity to have the full experience of a 6.3, essentially as it was, back in the early 1970s.
