Description

Public editions of race cars are always exciting to serious collectors, and this effectively new, limited-edition Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG stands ready to blow the mind of anyone eager to experience its blistering performance.

The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters is the equivalent of NASCAR in Europe. It draws 100,000 fans to watch fiercely competitive road racing in which no quarter is given – or asked. When Mercedes-Benz dashed to the 2003 DTM championship with a C208 CLK from in-house tuner AMG, the company decided to offer a version to the public. Just 100 coupes were built in 2004, and 80 convertibles in 2006.

In 2004, AMG slightly modified a CLK DTM chassis, with steel body, and front and rear spoilers and bulging fenders of carbon fiber. The CLK DTM was available only in silver or black; with its interior stripped, then skinned in carbon fiber, including high-back seats (only two) with a cross-member behind them. AMG widened the front track by 2.9”, the rear by 4.2” and lowered the chassis by nearly an inch. With Dunlop Super Sport racetrack tires on 19” and 20” AMG alloy wheels, 1.35 lateral g is possible.

The DTM race engine was normally aspirated and limited to four liters and 500 bhp, but the street version developed 574 bhp from a 5.5-liter supercharged V-8. It was a torque monster, capable of achieving 590 lbs./ft at 3,500 rpm through a paddle-operated sequential gearbox and a limited-slip differential at the rear wheels. The street version could dash from 0 to 60 mph in only 3.8 seconds, and top speed was electronically limited to 200 mph.

The car on offer has covered just over 2,100 miles, according to its CARFAX report, which lists seven service records and 16 detailed records at the time of cataloguing. The first owner was Florida-based, and in March 2005 this car was imported strictly for show and display. The original build sheets and Bill of Sale are included.

Lest any doubt exist about the ferocity of CLK DTM coupes, owners reportedly included Formula 1 drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Jenson Button. The buyer of this low-mileage, hard-charging CLK-DTM will be in great company.
