Presented in April 1951 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz W187 was the first luxury car from the company since the Second World War. With its in-line six-cylinder engine, it renewed the tradition of German luxury cars. Designated with the number "220" in reference to its 2.2-litre capacity, it took the aesthetics of the 170S and added new streamlined headlights. Available in four body styles, saloon, convertible A, convertible B and coupé A, the W187 sold 18,514 units, of which only 1,278 were convertible A and 997 convertible B. Sold from 1951 to 1955, it was one of the most expensive cars of its time before being replaced by the new "Ponton" in 1954. Apart from the coupe, the A convertible was the most sought-after version of the Mercedes-Benz W187, as its lines were much slimmer and more elegant than the B convertible, whose rear windows disrupted the design. Capable of reaching 145 kilometres per hour, the 220 had 79 horsepower and four gears, making it a very modern car to drive for its time and, above all, relatively efficient compared to the competition.
The car presented here has benefited from a titanic restoration as shown by the important restoration file with which it will be delivered.
Painted in an elegant dark blue with a grey leather interior, it offers a superb presentation. It has been meticulously maintained since its restoration, and its current owner uses it with great care. The black soft top is like new, with a soft top cover and the upholstery was completely redone during the restoration. The woodwork and chrome are in perfect condition. The odometer shows only 4515 km since the engine refurbishment. It has a retractable rear seat that can accommodate one adult or two children. The spare wheel and jack are in the boot. It also has its own tailor-made leather luggage set, so there are no wrong notes when driving or getting out. A test drive showed that the engine, gearbox and chassis are in good condition. Very modern to drive, it is the ideal car for elegance competitions and other tourist rallies.
Elegant, distinguished and full of presence, this Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet A is in an exceptional state of presentation testifying to a restoration with great attention to detail.
