Description

Maserati’s influential Ghibli, the Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed eight-cylinder GT model of the late 1960s, underwent subtle changes during its five years of production. In contrast to the more standardized Ghiblis that appeared in later years, the early 4.7-liter coupes like this example displayed many unique equipment features that lent them a particular rarity.

Built during the first year of Ghibli production, chassis no. AM115.078 is believed to be the 39th example of 1,149 coupes manufactured between 1967 and 1972. As a very early example, the Ghibli features Smiths gauges, a drop-down lipped trunk lid that extends through the license plate area, Campagnolo alloy wheels, a Hellebore wood-rimmed steering wheel, and the unusual early engine that was built with dual spark-plug holes and 40 mm Weber carburetors.

In 1992, the Maserati was acquired by an East Coast owner who invested in some mechanical work. Purchased in April 1999 by a midwestern collector, the car was stored for more than a decade before the consignor acquired it. In 2015, it was treated to a full bout of freshening measures by RMB Garage of Stockton, California, resulting in a well-presented example that exudes authenticity.

Sure to be welcomed at Italian car shows and Maserati gatherings, this fascinating Ghibli 4.7 Coupe epitomizes the purity of Giugiaro’s celebrated design and will ably complement the finest sports car collections.
