Description
The Tipo 117 Bora was Maserati’s entry into the mid-engine supercar market. Penned by the Italdesign studio of Giorgetto Giugiaro, and introduced at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, the Bora combined a mid-engine layout with the creature comforts and storage space of a conventional GT car.
Underneath the subtle wedge-shaped body shell, the Bora utilized a monocoque chassis and fully independent suspension. Power was supplied by a 4.7-liter V-8 – later upsized to 4.9 liters in 1973 – backed by a five-speed transaxle. The Bora used the French manufacturer Citroën’s innovative hydraulic system to operate the brakes, pop-up headlights, driver’s seat, and adjustable pedal box. Over seven years, 564 Boras rolled off the production line, with Aga Khan and film producer Carlo Ponti among the original buyers.
This Bora is one of just 275 built with the 4.9-liter engine and finished in black over a well-preserved Senape Connolly leather interior. An original US-specification model presented in well-kept, substantially original condition throughout, this example was fitted with the more desirable European bumpers for a sleeker look. Accompanying the sale are books, tools, jack, and Maserati Classiche documentation confirming its matching-numbers engine.
Offered from one of the finest private Maserati collections, this beautiful Bora is worthy of close inspection.
