Description

French registration papers (as a historic vehicle)

- Interesting first generation model
- Legendary symbol of the Fifties
- Lovely V8 soundtrack

The first generation Thunderbird, more commonly known as the ‘T-Bird’, was a fully developed, luxurious and powerful car right from the start. Ford was looking for a way to compete with Chevrolet and its Corvette, introduced in 1953 … and scored an immediate success. A strict two-seat roadster, it had remarkably graceful, flowing lines for an American car of the 1950s. It was only available as a V8, which positioned it straightaway as an up-market model. Ford’s marketing stressed its ‘luxurious’ European inspiration. The standard V8 engine was a 292 ci (4.8-litre unit) producing 198 bhp, which gave it an immediate advantage over its rival at the time, which was sold with an in-line six. In 1957, Ford offered an optional 312 ci V8 (5.1 litres) developing 245 bhp, which could be further increased with an optional Paxton supercharger. Today, the first generation Ford Thunderbird is one of the few American cars to be highly popular in Europe.

The model which we are offering for sale is a 1955 T-Bird fitted with a 292 ci V8 engine and 3-speed automatic gearbox. The car is in good general condition, with attractive red paintwork, black vinyl interior and red carpets.

Its current owner has carried out a good deal of work over the past few years. The engine was removed and inspected so that the crankshaft seals could be replaced. The radial shaft seals on the gearbox and rear axle are also new. The carburettor, starter and ignition have been restored. The brakes have been overhauled and the fuel tank cleaned. All four shock absorbers are new, as are the steering joints which were renewed before the front suspension settings were adjusted. We found it a well-balanced car to drive, with a pleasing engine note. This imposing convertible which symbolises the Fifties is offered today at an attractive estimated price and needs only a new owner to cruise along the beautiful roads of France.
