Description
1968 Shelby Mustang GT350 Fastback Coupé
Registration no. YRD 72F
Chassis no. 8T02J204804-03265
Engine no. to be advised
Sold new to Courtesy Motors Inc of Littleton, Colorado on 5th July 1968 (order number '6974'), this Shelby Mustang GT350 was then shipped to Ford Dealer C P Snow of Colton, California. Original factory-to-dealer paperwork on file reveals that '03265' was ordered in white with power disc brakes; power steering; shoulder harness; fold-down rear seat; AM pushbutton radio; and a tilting steering wheel. '03265' is listed in the Shelby American World Registry.
The Shelby seems to have sat on a driveway in San Bernardino, California for approximately 10 years before being imported into the UK in 1988 (see copy of form C&E 386 and old US titles on file). On 14th January 1992 the car was registered to the current owner, who is its first and only registered keeper in the UK. When acquired in 1991 the car was partially assembled but had a rebuilt engine and been treated to a very good re-spray. Assembled and running by 1992, it won 'Best Shelby' award at the Mustang/Shelby Owners Club of Great Britain meeting in September 1994 (plaque on file). Since then the Shelby has participated in RAC MSA Rallies in the UK and their annual Euro Classic for approximately 12 years during the 1990s and 2000s, competing in 16 European countries and all major circuits across Europe.
In 2006, the engine and transmission were removed for rebuild and replaced with a Ford Racing Cleveland 5.0-litre XB3 'crate' engine producing 350bhp, and a Tremec TKO 500 five-speed manual transmission (specifications in history file). This combination is currently in the car and, we are advised, provides high-speed Continental cruising with plenty of power on tap for circuit racing, hill climbs, etc. The brake lines, compensating valve, master cylinder and hoses were replaced in 2019.
Other notable features include Koni shock absorbers all round; an electric cooling fan; Total Control front strut rods; and the original interior. The original matching-numbers engine and rare Toploader close-ratio manual gearbox are included in the sale (both need re-building) together with the original fan. It should be noted that the wiring loom has been replaced but needs completing (original harness included for reference).
The Shelby is offered with a large portfolio of history: photographs, bills, MoTs, previous owner correspondence, etc, including the Shelby Automotive Factory to Dealer invoice; Shelby Automotive Inc Individual Order; last US 'Pink Slip' registration; confirmation of UK registration; and a V5C document. The car also comes with an owner's handbook, workshop manual, and a comprehensive historical information file.
