Ferrari’s Mondial, which was introduced in 1980, had always been a car for those who had to have it all. It was uncompromising in the respect that it coupled a mid-engine V-8 with space for four passengers, and it was versatile enough to be driven in anger on a race track or lovingly to and from the office on a daily basis. The Mondial saw several updates throughout its production run, with the final and most desirable variant being the Mondial t. The “t” in its name represents its transverse gearbox and longitudinal engine layout, which was a change that allowed the drivetrain to be lowered by 13 centimeters, giving the car much better handling. Of course, this would not be the only change to the Mondial. Most notably engine capacity increased to 3.4-liters, bumping the horsepower rating to 300. From 1988 to 1993, 1,017 examples of the Mondial t Cabriolet were produced.
This 1989 Ferrari Mondial t Cabriolet was delivered new through Grand Prix Motors of Seattle, Washington in 1989. It was purchased new by Jon Shirley, who at the time was Microsoft’s President and Chief Operating Officer. While Mr. Shirley’s accomplishments at Microsoft are well noted, his car collection is also quite impressive housing some of the finest Italian cars produced. Mr. Shirley would keep the car for six years, covering 8,000 miles. The Ferrari’s next owner was Alexander Kovatch who would go onto enjoy the car for 19-years over which time he covered just over 31,000 miles. It was subsequently purchased in 2014 by Craig Roller, who negotiated an engine out service be completed as part of the deal. Mr. Roller would enjoy the Ferrari until 2016 when it was purchased by current ownership.
Today the Mondial t Cabriolet is offered with just 34,856 miles from new. It’s finished in black over crème with a black convertible top. A crème top boot cover conceals the top when down. The car is accompanied by manuals with leather pouch, tool kit, and select service records. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/0520.
