Very affordable Ferrari V8
We are at the end of the 1970s and the Dino 308 GT4 is coming to the end of its career. Convinced of the viability of a four-seater GT with a central rear engine, Enzo Ferrari entrusted the design of the new V8 saloon to Pininfarina. Thus was born in 1980 the Ferrari Mondial, which would have an exceptionally long career of 14 years, unthinkable today. The line was refined and brought up to the standards of the time. Wrap-around bumpers, side ventilation grilles, retractable headlights. The bodywork remains on a tubular chassis, whose wheelbase is ten centimetres longer, making the Ferrari Mondial more habitable than its predecessor. The four overhead camshaft V8 engine, transmission and rear suspension are mounted on a new, removable cradle that supports the engine, transmission and rear suspension, and is located in the rear centre. It originally develops 214 horsepower, a power that will gradually increase with the Quattrovalvole series to 240, then 270 with the 3.2 Mondial and finally peak at 300 with the Mondial T. To promote habitability, the Ferrari Mondial is equipped with four independent seats in Connolly leather, allowing even rear passengers to travel comfortably while benefiting from the vocalisations of the V8.
The Ferrari Mondial we present in these pages is one of the very first 3.0 Quattrovalvole coupes produced in 1982, and was first put on the road on January 5th 1983. It is the official Ferrari Sa.Mo.Car dealer in Bologna, which sells the car to the owner of an important household products company. The car arrived in Belgium in 2014 and is now in the hands of its second Flemish owner. The car is in its original rosso corsa and black leather configuration, has never been restored and on the day of our visit had just over 117,000 kilometres on the odometer. The bodywork looks good as a whole despite the years, while the patinated interior deserves a little refreshment. The tool kit, the spare wheel and the original notebooks are still part of the car, while the distribution and the change of the water pump have just been done. Back on the road after several months of immobilization, this Mondial coupé 3.0 represents an interesting opportunity to acquire a Ferrari with a V8 central engine for an incomparable budget.
