French registration
- Superb factory body without pillars
- High quality restauration, good working order
- Rare car, suitable for most concours d’élégance
How good - and rare - it is to read in an English newspaper, that a French car outperformed all other cars in the world. The very serious Oxford Times affirmed in 1933 that: "The Delage D8 could not be any more described than only by the title of "Rolls-Royce of French cars", because its mechanics, its comfort, its finish is unsurpassed. The other aspect is more sporty and is found in the Advertisements claiming for example "Only performance proves quality". This double vision marks the history of Delage, so we remember the outstanding performance of the Delage 1500 Grand Prix, whose sophisticated engine enabled to win the 1927 World Championship. It has its equivalent in the luxury and prestige sector, with the D8 presented at the Paris Motor Show 1929. On a chassis that the body makers will make their own to produce among the most beautiful achievements of that time, the D8 is equipped with a 4-litre in-line eight-cylinder engine. To meet a certain request, in 1933, the D8 was joined by a 2.7-litre in-line eight-cylinder engine. In many ways, the D8-15 was a great success, taking up the strengths of its big sister in many ways. with a upper class clientele, but the sales figures were not enough to save the brand, taken over in 1935 by Delahaye.
With its elegant sedan body without a central pillar, the model we are presenting is, according to the club The Friends of Delage, « les amis de Delage » that we interviewed, a representative of what is commonly known as one of the most beautiful cars of its time. Its bodywork is most likely a factory body, 4 doors without pillars on normal chassis, made by Autobineau. We know that it only knew one owner in France from 1985 to 2006 before being sold by the well-known Swiss merchant Christophe Grohe in July 2007. Having been the object of a very beautiful restoration, it is still in good condition in addition to ensuring a very good mechanical state. It is equipped with its Delage Barriquand carburettor which seems to be the original one. Bought by Francis Staub at an auction in Paris at the Grand Palais 6 years ago, it is sold with a letter from the French Delage club signed by Patrick Delâge, confirming that this car is matching numbers, as well as a very nice original manual "description and maintenance" on the 8-cylinder Delage. « Delage, the beautiful French car » : this slogan sums up a part of the personality of the brand.
