Description
"The Daimler Dart was built in Coventry and launched at the 1959 New York Motor Show achieving great success in the North American market. Built with a fibreglass body, the power was provided by the 2.5 litre Edward Turner designed V8 that soon became revered for the smoothness in its power delivery with 140bhp on tap. Independent double wishbone front suspension at the front and half elliptical springs at the rear with a live rear axle, kept the car on the road with stopping power supplied by hydraulic disc brakes on all four corners. The car was described as a 2+2 but the bench like rear seat offered very limited leg room unless the front seats were pushed fully forward. Daimler were soon forced to drop the Dart name when threatened with legal action by Chrysler's Dodge division, the car was then renamed the Daimler SP250.
This handsome Daimler Dart has a stunning metallic red finish with a beige leather interior. The vendor states that he wanted to rebuild the car to last another 50 years, this certainly shows. The history file accompanying this car includes photographic evidence of the comprehensive restoration, during which a large amount of parts have been replaced in stainless steel, these include the petrol tank and the complete exhaust system. The chassis was sand blasted and hot zinc sprayed before having a gloss polyester powder coat applied. The engine was stripped to the bare block, the cylinder heads were returned to like new condition. The gearbox underwent a complete rebuild and was fitted with overdrive and the wiring loom was completely replaced. This Dart is presented to auction with a V5C registration document and a valid MoT test certificate. It is believed that fewer than 700 Daimler Darts exist and this stunning model represents an opportunity to own one of the finest ones."
