Description
About this Collectable
The Audi RS4 Cabriolet: a rare convertible, which combines a wonderful atmospheric V8 with Quattro four-wheel drive and a manual gearbox. This example has a verifiable 82,300 km on the odometer and is understatedly delivered as a wolf in sheep's clothing.
When you think of the Audi RS4, you immediately think of the RS4 Avant. However, the RS4 Cabrio should not be overlooked. This convertible is based on - according to many - the best generation of the Audi RS4: the B7. With the Cabriolet you can experience the pleasures of a naturally aspirated V8 with the roof down. An excellent recipe in our opinion.
After the RS2 with a five-cylinder and the RS4 B5 with a V6, the RS4 B7 was the first in the lineage with a V8. More specifically, a high revving naturally aspirated 4,2 liter V8, producing 100 hp per litre. The power output is therefore 420 hp. Additionally, you have a generous 430 Nm of torque at your disposal, making it faster than its biggest rival, the M3 E93 Cabrio.
The main difference with the M3 is of course the lay-out: the RS4 is equipped with Audi's famous Quattro all-wheel drive system. The RS4 B7 was equipped with a new version of the Quattro system, which can send up to 85% of the power to the rear wheels. This means that this all-wheel drive Audi can also be very playful if you want it to be.
The RS4 is built to be a driver's car and this is reflected in the choice of transmissions. The RS4 B7 was only available with a six-speed manual transmission. A perfect combination with this high revving V8. Especially if you like to enjoy the sound it produces with the roof down.
The exterior of the RS4 can be described as subtly brutal. The typical RS characteristics are present, in the shape of the honeycomb grille and oval exhaust tailpipes. The RS4 also distinguishes itself with flared wheel arches, a front bumper with extra air intakes and special rims.
In the interior, it is also clear that you're not sitting in a regular Audi A4 Cabriolet. In front of you is a flattened steering wheel and the interior has been given a carbon trim. Geek fact, when you press the 'S' button not only the exhaust valves open, but also the seat bolster get tighter.
The RS4 Cabriolet has only been available for a relatively short period of time, which makes it a rare find. Only 1.507 examples were delivered worldwide.
Our opinion
A four-seater convertible with a smooth-shifting manual gearbox, Quattro all-wheel drive and a top that insulates so well that 200+ on the AutoBahn is still comfortable. It has the same engine as in the Audi R8, about which we can be brief. A magnificent engine with both torque at low revs and an eagerness to rev. In terms of suppleness, it almost seems like an electric motor; it just keeps going until the rev limiter kicks in.
No one will mistake this Audi with its flared wheel arches for a small four cilinder, but in this black with beige leather, it is actually a car that can be daily driven by the hard working family man.
At the time, an RS4 Cabriolet started at around € 120,000 (without options) in The Netherlands which was far too expensive, but therefore it became an extremely rare car. Only 1,507 were eventually built, of which this one will soon go to another car enthusiast.
