The archetypal Italian sports car of the 1960s, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT, also known as the “Bertone coupé”, owed its elegant, well-balanced lines to a young designer, then aged just 22: Giorgetto Giugiaro, whose career was only just beginning. Its all-alloy 1570 cc four-cylinder engine had a cylinder head with twin overhead camshafts and developed 106 bhp, thanks to its two dual-barrel carburettors. Power was transmitted through a precise and quick five-speed gearbox, while braking was taken care of by discs all round. The car proved so successful that it was built until 1976 and produced in numerous versions, of which the most legendary remain the GTA and GTAm models for competition.

This Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT was delivered new in September 1965 in Brescia by the leading dealer Emilio Romano. Its first owner, Luigi Ghidoni, kept the car for 37 years, as its FIVA passport indicates. In 2002, its second Italian owner purchased the car and it moved to the region of Apulia in the south of the country. He sold it 8 years later to a resident of Switzerland, and in 2014 it was acquired by Jean Brandenburg, who thus became only its fourth owner. A motorsport enthusiast, with a particular passion for historic rallying, Brandenburg entered his Giulia Sprint GT 1600 in turn in the Tour de Corse Historique in 2014 and in the Monte-Carlo Historique in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Alfa recorded its best result in the last year, with an excellent 4th place overall and a class win in the Monte-Carlo Historique. A very quick car, the Giulia underwent a very thorough overhaul in 2018, carried out by the Garage du Nord, an Alfa Romeo specialist based near Lausanne. The 1600 cc engine was removed, the two Weber 45 DCOE carburettors serviced and the cylinder head replaced, along with the con rods, valves and valve springs. A lightweight flywheel was specially fabricated and the racing clutch replaced. Altogether, the bill amounted to nearly 20,000 €. Very fast and prepared to win rallies, this Giulia Sprint GT runs beautifully. As the car has hardly been driven for 2 years, the brakes should nonetheless be bled and a minor check-up is recommended before it is driven again, as is the case for all old cars which have been laid up for a lengthy period.
