Spellbound by Hitchcock? Bid on some memorabilia…

For those fascinated by the sometimes dark, always interesting world of Alfred Hitchcock, two forthcoming Christie’s sales separately list a b/w portrait and an original film poster.

The Edinburgh-born photographer Albert Watson took this study (above) of the famous English director in 1973. Hitchcock is seen in black tie, carrying a plucked goose similarly dressed for dinner. A bizarre image, but one that captures the slightly odd nature of its principal subject. Numbered 24 of 25, it’s estimated at GBP 6,000 – 8,000 and will be offered by Christie’s at its 15 May, King St, London sale.

The second piece, for auction on 23 May in the Christie’s South Kensington salerooms, is an original poster from one of the director’s most famous films, ‘North By Northwest’. The 40 x 30in print, estimated at GBP 800 – 1,200, shows Cary Grant seemingly at the mercy of a pistol-toting Eva Marie Saint.
