A Smile Every Mile: Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

Enjoying the Porsche 911’s 50th birthday celebrations from afar? Why not join in the festivities? G-Series cars have long been targeted by buyers, but there are still plenty of good examples available for sale if you know where to look...

Although television screens in the 80s were frequently filled with more exotic cars (and hair-dos, come to think of it), the 911 proved extremely popular with the young up-and-comers. If you had a 911, you’d made it. The 3.2 Carrera’s new 231bhp engine meant that, at the time, it was claimed to be the fastest convertible in the world.

The G-Series Carrera Cabriolet is classic 911: bulletproof reliability, impressive performance and a then-fashionable flared design, reminiscent of the trousers worn so enthusiastically in the previous decade. More importantly, it’s affordable. Carrera Cabrios are going for less than half the price of the equivalent current model, and are arguably ten times as stylish.

There’s no better time to buy, too, what with the 50th anniversary of the 911 being celebrated throughout 2013. This desirable 80s Porsche is the last of the proper, old-school 911s. Though we’d take ours in Guards Red, this white car, with a loud purple interior and clashing brown soft-top, is about as 80s as it gets. Just don’t forget your Filofax.
