Beschreibung

The Dino, named for Enzo Ferrari’s son Alfredino, was Ferrari’s answer to market demand for a junior racer with a production-based engine, designed to meet Formula 2 regulations.

Powered by a 2.0-liter, six-cylinder engine, the aluminum-bodied Dino 206 GT was launched at the Torino Motor Show in 1967. By 1969, a larger engine and longer wheelbase version was required, and the Dino 246 was born. It evolved through three series, the last of which began after July 1971, benefiting from former series improvements.

This late-production 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS was completed on March 27, 1974, and is one of only 313 built in the final year of production. According to Dino authority Matthias Bartz, chassis 07912 was mated with engine no. 135 CS 000 0011908 at the factory, and they have remained united ever since. Upon leaving Scaglietti, finished in elegant Rosso Bordeaux (Bordeaux Red) with a Beige leather interior, this Dino was delivered to Chinetti Garthwaite Import Inc., in Pennsylvania.

The 246 GTS was purchased new for $17,800, from Wide World of Cars Inc. in Nanuet, New York, by David T. Gunn of New London, New Hampshire, and he kept it until 1985, when it had traveled just 18,000 miles. The Ferrari passed among several East Coast collectors until it was acquired in 1987 by Karl Dedolph, a brain surgeon from Wayzata, Minnesota. A collector of unrestored cars, Mr. Dedolph appreciated the fine original condition of this Dino, and also owned an unrestored Ferrari 275 GTB and Porsche 356 Coupe. In 2000, with just over 20,000 miles, the Dino was sold by Mr. Dedolph at a Christie’s auction to the consignor.

A connoisseur of highly original, unrestored cars, the consignor reports that the Dino still retains its factory paint and upholstery. Importantly, the Dino also still retains its tool kit, jack, and tonneau cover, along with its original manuals and warranty card. In his ownership, the consignor has driven the car about 7,500 miles and had it serviced by Paul Russell and Company of Essex, Massachusetts, and Independent Ferrari Service of South Easton, Massachusetts. Fitted with a great-sounding Tubi Style exhaust, today the Dino has less than 28,000 original miles on the odometer.

This lovely, low-mileage 246 GTS is highly desirable as a late, US-specification example equipped with factory Borletti air-conditioning. Its unrestored condition and well-documented ownership history make it even more appealing and worthy of a place in the finest collections. A superlative example of Ferrari’s first mid-engine, road-going sports car, this Dino is ready for a new chapter with its fortunate new owner.
