Manufactured by Automobile S.C.A.F. ( Société de Construction des Automobiles Francis ), the miniature Ford GT40 was the second children’s race car to be designed and built by French automotive enthusiast François Mortarini in 1968. Sanctioned by the Ford Motor Company, these diminutive race cars featured a single center seat mounted to a tubular frame. The fiberglass body is designed with a removable roof, which allowed Mr. Mortarini to retain the dimensions of the GT40 at scale. Much like the original, a removable rear lid grants access to the engine, which has since been upgraded to a Briggs & Stratton motor with an electric starter.

Alongside Mr. Mortarini’s first creation, a child-sized Ferrari 330 P2, these Mini GT40s served in the creation of Grand Prix de France International Mini Automobile, a race for children that preceded the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968, a precursor to today’s well-known Little Big Mans event. While it was available in several colors, this example (chassis 002) was finished with the iconic Gulf livery, which was previously restored by noted vehicle preservationist Don Orosco, from whom the current owner acquired it. With the addition of the no. 14, this S.C.A.F. GT40 pays homage to John Wyer’s 1967 Mirage Ford GT40 Coupe, the very first car to carry the now famed color combination of powder blue with marigold racing stripe.
