La Bugatti Atlantic est devenue une icône du design et fut développée à partir du prototype Aérolithe. En termes d’élégance, de qualité et de performances, le coupé Atlantic était unique à son époque et le reste aujourd’hui encore. Quatre voitures seulement ont été produites entre 1936 et 1938 Trois de ces extraordinaires coupés existent encore, chacun avec une carrosserie différente, chaque automobile étant un modèle unique. La partie arrière de sa carrosserie descend jusqu’au sol et la particularité la plus remarquable de la voiture est certainement la nervure centrale de tôles qui s’étire longitudinalement depuis le sommet du radiateur à l’avant jusqu’à l’extrême pointe de la poupe. Comme la crête dorsale d’un animal. Des centaines de rivets maintiennent les tôles en place. Jean Bugatti a utilisé l’Elektron développé en 1908 par une société allemande, qui était réputée pour sa légèreté et sa robustesse, mais également pour la difficulté à le travailler et ne pouvait, à l’époque, être soudé. C’est un travail de titan qui est entrepris sur cette auto, l’ossature en bois est réalisée grâce à des plans originaux alors que la carrosserie en métal est l’œuvre d’un tôlier formeur. Le mélange subtil des trois Atlantic connue est remarquable, le dessin de l’arrière avec sa crête centrale rivetée est une signature originale. En plus d’être une œuvre d’art, cette réalisation est parfaitement fonctionnelle : le moteur tourne bien, la boite se manie avec facilité et le faisceau électrique est sans défaut. Un dossier photos de la création de cette Unic spéciale témoigne de toutes les étapes de sa construction. The wooden frame is made from original plans, while the metal body is the work of a sheet metal worker. The subtle blend of the three Atlantic materials is remarkable, the design of the rear with its riveted central ridge is an original signature. In addition to being a work of art, this car is perfectly functional: the engine runs smoothly, the gearbox is easy to handle and the wiring is flawless.
