The turbocharged type 930 variant of the Porsche 911 is among the most recognisable and coveted road-going Porsches of all time. FIA Group 4 homologation rules requiring 400 road cars spurred the development of “Project 930,” now known as the legendary 911/930 Turbo. In production from 1975 to 1989, the 911 Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0-litre Carrera RSR engine for a substantial increase in power and top speed over the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera. In 1978, the engine was enlarged to 3.3 litres, gaining even more power and an intercooler in the process. Standard equipment for the 911 Turbo included flared wheel arches, a “whale tail” spoiler, and a more upscaled interior featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning, and electric windows. The 911 Turbo Cabriolet, with its power-operated soft top, was introduced for the 1987 model year.
The example offered here is one of a limited number of 911 Turbo Cabriolet models specified with the desirable “G50” five-speed manual transmission. Delivered new to Monaco, it left the factory finished in its current configuration of Guards Red over a black leather interior and was configured with a locking differential, a shorter gearstick, sports seats with electric height adjustment, top-tinted windscreen, and velour carpet in the luggage compartment.
Notably, the car retains its matching-numbers engine and showed 82,793 km on its odometer at the time of cataloguing. Under current ownership since February of 2014, this 911 Turbo Cabriolet is said to have been cosmetically and mechanically reconditioned to a high standard, including respraying the exterior in its factory-correct colour of Guards Red, refurbishing the engine and transaxle, and professional detailing with application of ceramic coating. Accompanying the sale is the Porsche warranty book, tonneau cover, factory manuals, tool roll, and a space-saver spare wheel. Generously configured from new, fastidiously maintained under current ownership, and replete with a matching-numbers chassis and engine, this is a fine example of one of the most desirable air-cooled 911 models from the final production year of the coveted “G Series”.
