The Porsche 356 is nothing less than the first model produced by the German brand. It was imagined during the Second World War by Ferry Porsche on the mechanical basis of the Volkswagen Beetle for reasons of economy and designed by Erwin Komenda, then both expatriates in Austria in Gmünd. The first prototype and a first series of 356 cars were produced in Gmünd in 1948. The entire production moved to Stuttgart in 1950. Called pre-A, the first series immediately proved a commercial success in the United States. In particular with Hollywood actors, starting with James Dean who became an icon of the brand in spite of himself. Manufactured until 1955, the 356 pre-A offered its four-cylinder flatbed engine in three sizes (1,100, 1,300 and 1,500 cc) and the Coupé, Cabriolet and Speedster versions that would be used in later versions. It then gave way to the 356 A, which was extensively modified and offered with five engines, including three 1,600 cc engines. In 1960, the 356 A was replaced by the completely redesigned 356 B (T5). Its power ranges from 60 hp for the 356 B 1600 to 140 hp for the 356 B 2000 GS-GT Carrera 2. The B-Series also differs from its predecessor by its front bumper, which is about ten centimetres higher and equipped with wider bumper stops, as well as by higher-positioned headlights. With the BT6 released in 1962, the 356 B was equipped with a front bonnet that widened significantly downwards, as well as a fuel filler flap in the right front fender. The ultimate version, the 1964 356 C, will not receive any modification on its body, mechanically the arrival of 4 disc brakes is the main evolution.
Sold new in California at the end of 1963, our 356 1600 SC bodywork Karmann arrives in France in 2009. It has been fully restored several years ago, its cream paint is associated with black upholstery and grey carpets. Its current owner bought it in 2011, one year later, it will participate in the Tour Auto and will finish 8th in the regularity category. Since then, the car has been rigorously maintained, its engine and gearbox were completely overhauled in 2016. Our 356 has covered just over 5,000 km since then. It is now in good cosmetic condition and we were completely satisfied with its road test. Offered for sale at an attractive estimate, our matching numbers will seduce fans of the model.
