Nineteen seventy-four was such a season of turmoil in the automotive industry. Due to rising gas prices and availability plus increasingly stringent federal regulations, the turn away from the vaunted American musclecar was seen throughout the industry.
The curb weights of the Firebird rose dramatically in the 1974 model year due to the implementation of 5-mph telescoping bumpers and various other crash and safety related structural reengineering; SD455 Trans Ams weighed in at 3,850 pounds. The 1974 models featured a redesigned front end and new wide slotted taillights. The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am took on a new, more aerodynamic shape. The hood bird returned and proved to be quite the popular feature.
The well-respected SD455 made its final appearance, and the industry has seen little like it since. The car’s fresh appearance was the big marketing news for Pontiac in 1974; sales for the Trans Am's were their strongest yet. It's amazing to see how an engine can generate such enthusiasm amongst Firebird aficionado’s more than 40 years after its inception, but when conversation turns to the Pontiac Super Duty 455 maybe heads will turn to join in with appreciation. Introduced in a period when other manufacturers were turning away from performance, the SD455 developed an aura that became entrenched for those who read about it in period automobile magazines, plus all who have experienced its fierce acceleration.
Finished in Cameo White over black, this 1974 Trans Am Super Duty 455 is a very tidy representation of this legendary Pontiac muscle. Powering the car is the celebrated SD 455-cid V-8 engine that is connected to a very rare M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission. Originally from Arizona, this Trans Am is believed to be, and is reported as "completely original." This Pontiac has a 3.42:1 Posi-traction rear differential, center console, Delco AM/FM radio, factory Rally II wheels, Goodyear Eagle GT2 tires, tinted glass; power windows, brakes and steering.
For 1974, there were a reported total of 10,255 Trans Am’s built; of these only 943 were the 455 Super Duty with only 212 being equipped with a four-speed transmission such as this machine. It is complete with documentation, build sheet and window sticker.
