Après-guerre, Panhard, la marque doyenne, se met à l’heure du jour, en produisant simple, robuste et efficace. Après la Dyna X et son style baroque très Louis XV, place à la Z, qui sera présentée en juin 1953. Avec sa bouille très ronde et son élégante carrosserie en Duralinox, la nouvelle née offre un Cx révolutionnaire pour l’époque de 0,26 et des performances exceptionnelles pour une voiture de si petite cylindrée (bicylindre de 851 cm3). Elle ne consomme de plus que 6 l aux 100 km en transportant 6 passagers… La recette est idéale pour un succès commercial, mais les coûts de production, notamment de la caisse en Duralinox ont été sous-évalués, et la direction (Citroën est entré au capital de la marque en 1955 à hauteur de 25 %, puis de 45 % en 1958) décide de passer au tout acier en 1958, avec un surpoids de plus de 150 kg. Entretemps, Renault a répliqué avec la bien pensée et bon marché Dauphine, et Panhard se doit de faire évoluer sa gamme. En 1959, la nouvelle PL 17 remplace la Dyna Z qui aura été produite à 139 065 exemplaires (berlines).

La Dyna Z16 que nous présentons fut mise en circulation le 21 octobre 1958, et affiche aujourd’hui un peu plus de 57 000 km au compteur, ce qui pourrait être son kilométrage d’origine. La voiture fut repeinte dans sa teinte d’époque, un superbe vert d’eau, tandis que son intérieur est toujours celui qu’elle avait à sa sortie d’usine, avec skaï bicolore (finition Grand Standing) et tapis tissés (sous ceux en caoutchouc). A part quelques défauts en carrosserie et des joints d’ouvrants craquelés, on notera que le volant et certains plastiques intérieurs sont fissurés. L’ensemble mécanique fonctionne très bien, comme les freins, et les pneus Michelin radiaux XSX ont peu roulé. Le moteur, un M5 Aérodyne, fonctionne bien, comme la boite de vitesses. Cette Dyna Z, dans sa jolie combinaison de couleurs d’origine, ravira le panhardiste averti comme l’amateur de populaires des années 1950.

After the war, Panhard, the old French brand, started to produce simple, robust and efficient cars. After the Dyna X and its very Louis XV baroque style, the Z was introduced in June 1953. With its very round face and elegant Duralinox bodywork, the newborn car had a revolutionary Cx for the time of 0.26 and exceptional performance for a car with such a small displacement (851 cc twin-cylinder). It consumed only 6 liters per 100 km while carrying 6 passengers... The recipe is ideal for commercial success, but the production costs, especially for the Duralinox body, were underestimated, and management (Citroën took a 25% stake in the brand in 1955, and then 45% in 1958) decided to go all-steel in 1958, with an extra weight of more than 150 kg. In the meantime, Renault had replied with the well thought-out and inexpensive Dauphine, and Panhard had to develop its range. In 1959, the new PL 17 replaced the Dyna Z, of which 139,065 were produced (sedans).

The Dyna Z16 that we present was put on the road on October 21, 1958 and has today a little over 57,000 km on the odometer, which could be its original mileage. The car was repainted in its original color, a beautiful aqua green, while its interior is still the same as when it left the factory, with two-tone leatherette (Grand Standing finish) and woven carpets (under the rubber ones). Apart from a few blemishes on the bodywork and cracked door seals, the steering wheel and some interior plastics are cracked. The mechanical set works very well, as do the brakes, and the Michelin XSX radial tires have not been used much. The engine, an M5 Aerodyne, works well, as does the gearbox. This Dyna Z, in its nice original color combination, will delight the experienced Panhardist as well as the 1950s peoples car lover.
