The new GT coupé appeared in 1981 and was based on the S-Class platform, with the wheelbase shortened by 10cm (4in). Aesthetically, the SEC banked on being different, with a completely new rectangular radiator grille and a very distinctive appearance. It had taut lines, the body was lower and details such as the pillarless side windows added a touch of elegance. Mercedes aimed the car primarily at the North American market and offered only V8 engines, with 380 and 500 versions at launch, reflecting the capacity of each model. The 500 SEC was therefore the top-of-the-range model when the coupé came out, before arrival of the 560. The 231bhp produced by its 4973cc V8 was sent to the rear wheels by a standard 4-speed automatic transmission. The interior offered a regal standard of comfort, with four proper seats and an impressive level of equipment for the period. The Mercedes 500 SEC stands out as the perfect blend of comfort, elegance and performance. With 30,184 cars built, it was a true commercial success for Mercedes-Benz and remains an iconic car from the 1980s.
The model which we are presenting here was first registered on 29 March 1990. This Mercedes 500 SEC was purchased new from the Mercedes Bosquet dealership by the owner of the well-known Don Camillo cabaret in the rue des Saints-Pères in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. In September 1992, he decided to part with it, selling the car to its current owner, who has now consigned it to us. Always keeping it under cover in the garage at his home, the proud owner had the car serviced regularly, either in the official Mercedes dealer network or with specialists, as the bills for 10,000 € from the last few years confirm. Keen to present the car at its best, in May the owner had the bodywork fully detailed by the specialist Msirius at Croissy-sur-Seine. With only 142,500km (88,500 miles) on the clock, the 500 SEC is presented in very good condition in its original shade of Astralsilber Metallic. Inside, the leather remains supple and all the equipment fitted works correctly. During our test, we appreciated the smooth operation of the automatic gearbox and the torque of the V8 engine. The W126 coupés have become genuine classics and well preserved examples with a low mileage are now rare. This 500 SEC is the exception which proves the rule …
