Presented at the 1979 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz W126 is the second generation of the S-Class. The flagship of the Stuttgart-based manufacturer marks a new design style and introduces numerous safety innovations. These include the first airbag, the safety belt with pretensioners and traction control. Produced from 1979 to 1991, it embodies the longest generation of the S-Class and will benefit from ten engines available on short or long wheelbase bodies. The Mercedes' superb design is the work of Bruno Sacco. Inspired by the W116, the design of the W126 is however finer. The line is a total success, helped by the wind tunnel that will allow the big car to be relatively economical thanks to its careful aerodynamics. In total, more than 800,000 units will be built and sold worldwide.
The model shown here is the top-of-the-range 560 long wheelbase SEL. The engine is the 5.6 litre V8 coupled to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The colour is Astral Silver metallic grey code 735U with a blue velvet interior, this configuration is of rare elegance. Sold new in Japan, the car arrives in France in 2020 with only about 70,000 km on the odometer, in an excellent state of preservation, only the velour has faded a little in some places. All options are present and functional. A service was recently carried out with the draining of all the fluids, the change of the fuel pressure regulator and the fitting of 4 new tyres... the notebooks and invoices are present with the car. Our test will confirm the excellent condition of the big Mercedes: the engine is torquey and powerful and the gearbox shifts smoothly. Flagship of the brand for a whole decade, there is still time to collect the W126 before the prices takes off.
