Mercedes-Benz launched the 600 in 1963 to compete directly with Rolls-Royce’s Phantom V. The massive 600 cruised effortlessly at 100 mph, while a 2,200 psi hydraulic pump powered self-leveling air suspension, brakes, door locks, power seats, trunk, windows, and sunroof.

This is the desirable “short” 126" wheelbase limousine, rather than the 153 1/2" wheelbase Pullman. According to the consignor, chassis 1667 began life as a European embassy car, before being purchased by its second owner in Minnesota.

MB Grand 600 Restoration of Wausau, Wisconsin, recently completed an $80,000 yearlong overhaul of this Autobahn stormer. According to the consignor, the air suspension was rebuilt, new Michelin tires fitted, brakes renewed, and the hydraulic switches serviced and adjusted. Front and back windshields were replaced, along with door, window, and sunroof seals. The engine was upgraded with a breakerless ignition, new Bosch injection pump, recalibrated injectors, and cold start valves. The radiator was rebuilt, hoses replaced, and the transmission serviced.

This 600 has been repainted in its correct color, but the interior is preserved, with a Becker Grand Prix stereo, whiskey glasses and container, and cherry wood trim. The original spare tire, tools, jack, and a fender flag-holder accompany the owner’s manuals, service records, and restoration bills. The consignor says that the car has not been shown in 16 years, and it is certainly bound to attract a crowd.
