Beschreibung

"Plato said that necessity was the mother of invention, a sentiment that chimed with Eric Waxenberger who decided it that the standard Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL would benefit from an upgrade. Whilst he loved the Paul Bracq design, he felt that it was underpowered, so he took the hugely powerful 6.3 litre motor from the flagship 600 limousine and shoehorned it into the SEL. The result was a nearly two tonne sports sedan with muscle car performance. At the time of its release, it was the world's fastest four-door car available, quite a claim given that it could cruise at over 200km/h with five occupants in complete luxury.

This very early model was a factory order by Austrian Mercedes-Benz dealership Wiesenthal & Co. of Vienna in October 1968. It was then exported by its first owner to Beirut, Lebanon and then sold to the vendor in September 2021, arriving in the UK in December with all taxes and duty paid. It has had its air suspension removed in favour of springs and shocks, a recommended upgrade given the previous ride quality and maintenance costs. The chromework shows minor pitting, and the Mexican Hat alloy wheels are in good condition although the tyres should be replaced. The interior has been retrimmed in white leather and needs attention in places and the wooden dash is beginning to reflect its years in the sun. It drives well with the engine reported as “strong with good oil pressure”. Documentation includes UK registration papers, an official letter from the Mercedes-Benz Homologation Department confirming the correct vehicle specifications and the copy of the Mercedes-Benz Data Card showing the factory build instructions from Wiesenthal & Co. and a date of completion of 23rd October 1968.
