Mercedes’ first goal when it set out to design the 190 E 2.3-16 was to homologate the new model in the famous German touring car championship, the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters). At the time, it was something of a pioneer and led to the appearance of its future rivals such as the BMW M3 E30, Ford Sierra Cosworth or Renault 21 2-Litre Turbo. Compared with the rest of the 190 range, the ‘16V’ model looked really provocative. A kind of downsized E-Class, the Mercedes 190 (factory code W201) resembled a caricature of Teutonic style, with lines which were taut, solid and reassuring. The build quality and the materials used were well up to the standards of the marque. Under the bonnet, Mercedes did not employ the usual techniques of increasing the engine capacity and torque output, but turned to the English specialist Cosworth, which was known for its ability to work its magic on 16-valve 4-cylinder engines. The cast-iron block was borrowed from the 230E, with a new crossflow-type cylinder head made from aluminium. When Cosworth had finished with it, the engine developed 185bhp at 6200rpm, with peak torque of 235Nm (173lb-ft) arriving at 4500rpm; it was mated to a five-speed manual gearbox from Getrag. Ahead of its time, the Mercedes made its mark and remains to this day one of the manufacturer’s best sports saloons.
The Mercedes 190 E 2.3-16 which we are presenting was first registered on 16 October 1984 in the Yvelines, to the west of Paris. Barely two years later, it moved to south-west France to become the property of Gaston Schattel, the owner of the garage Schattel Fils at Fleurance, which specialised in selling secondhand cars. He made it one of his personal cars and only used it from time to time. This is borne out by the car’s excellent overall condition and the 74,000km (46,000 miles) on the clock. The appearance of the car is virtually immaculate, both outside and inside, where the materials have aged well. The black leather upholstery is in very good condition and all the original equipment, including the Becker radio, are present and in working order. In addition, our car comes with both sets of keys, as well as its original service book and a file of invoices. Behind the wheel, we were satisfied with car’s overall behaviour. The 4-cylinder engine picks up revs progressively before giving full rein to its passion higher up the range, just as it did back in the day. The gearchange is precise and pleasant to use, while the brakes perform satisfactorily. Compared with its rivals, the Mercedes 190 E 2.3-16 still has the potential to be a worthwhile investment for the future. It is, moreover, difficult to find a comparable example, originally from France and with only two previous owners.
